This past September, my husband and I took a long awaited road trip to Denver. I was especially excited to visit the Unsinkable Molly Brown House, since I have a long standing fascination with Titanic. My husband’s bucket list, however, focused on driving up Pike’s Peak. A lover of challenging landscapes and panoramic views, he was eager to conquer the mountain—scaring me in the process.

We made the most of our time in Denver and the surrounding area, packing in countless exciting experiences. The city seamlessly blends history, nature, and culture, leaving you constantly amazed.

The Unsinkable Molly Brown House and Museum

Our first stop was the Unsinkable Molly Brown House Museum. The moment we approached, the Victorian architecture grabbed my attention. The house exuded grandeur, fitting for someone as remarkable as Molly Brown. Inside, the meticulously preserved rooms transported us back in time, offering a glimpse into Molly’s life. We learned about her survival of the Titanic disaster, her help in getting passengers onto lifeboats, and her later life as a socialite and philanthropist.

Larimer Street

After leaving the Unsinkable Molly Brown House, we took a leisurely stroll down the famous Larimer Street, one of Denver’s oldest and most iconic streets. The moment we stepped onto Larimer, we felt like we were walking through the heart of Denver’s history and modern charm all at once. The street, lined with beautiful red-brick buildings dating back to the 1800s, offered a glimpse into the city’s rich past. Despite its historical feel, Larimer Street buzzed with life and energy, featuring trendy cafes, boutique shops, and cozy restaurants.

My Culinary Experiences

Another major item on my bucket list is of course the food—Denver’s diverse culinary scene has me excited to dive in. My husband had planned for us to eat at the Buckhorn Exchange, a historic spot known for its wild game and classic steakhouse fare. Established in 1893, the Buckhorn is one of the oldest restaurants in Denver, with rustic décor and taxidermied animals adding to its old Western charm. Unfortunately, our packed schedule kept us from making it, but we still enjoyed some incredible food elsewhere on the trip.

Voodoo Donut

A must-visit for me was Voodoo Doughnut, the quirky doughnut shop loved by both locals and travelers. I always seek out Voodoo when I visit a city with one, and Denver was no exception. Known for its iconic pink boxes and creative doughnuts, Voodoo has built a loyal following. From the classic Maple Bacon Bar to the wild Doughnut of the Day, Denver didn’t disappoint. We grabbed a dozen, each more colorful and indulgent than the last. I especially loved the Voodoo Doll doughnut—filled with raspberry jam and topped with chocolate glaze. It was the perfect sweet treat to fuel the rest of our day.

Our next stop we decided to try some ice cream at Little Man Ice Cream, a local favorite known for its rich, homemade ice cream served in a giant milk jug-shaped building. Unfortunately, our timing was off—we arrived to a crazy long line and we had dinner reservations next door at Olinger’s. We’ll just have to grab ice cream next time were in Denver.

Olingers

Olinger’s was one place I simply couldn’t miss. The restaurant’s unique history, transitioning from a mortuary to a restaurant, immediately piqued my interest—it was right up my creepy alley. Located in a building with such a rich and slightly eerie past, I couldn’t help but be intrigued by the stories behind it. We opted to sit on the roof, not only to enjoy the beautiful view of Denver’s skyline but also because they have a food truck parked up there, adding a fun, laid-back vibe to the whole dining experience.

Our waiter was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu, recommending some of their standout dishes, and his enthusiasm made the whole experience even better. The food didn’t disappoint either. Olingers was a great place to unwind after a full day of sight seeing.

Stanley Hotel

Not far from Denver, Estes Park is home to the famous Stanley Hotel. Known for its stunning architecture and breathtaking mountain views, the Stanley is steeped in history and mystery. It gained fame as the inspiration for Stephen King’s The Shining, and its eerie, haunted reputation draws visitors from all over. The hotel’s grand design and spooky past make it a must-see, with many claiming to have experienced paranormal activity in its hallways. I, however, did not. Whether you’re a fan of the supernatural or just love historic landmarks, the Stanley Hotel offers an unforgettable experience.

We opted not to stay at the Stanley and instead lodged at Nicky’s Resort. This beautiful road side stop had everything we needed for the night. We especially loved sitting outside eating dinner and taking in the amazing fall views.

Pikes Peak

Up until this point, my husband had been a great sport, indulging me in all the places I wanted to explore, but it was finally his turn. The drive up Pike’s Peak terrified me! The road is paved all the way to the top, but the steep drop-offs create a heart-pounding experience, definitely not for the faint of heart. The views are stunning, offering a breathtaking perspective of the mountains and the valley below. At the summit, I was surprised to learn about the famous “Pike’s Peak Donut”, a treat unique to the top. It’s a sweet, fried dough pastry that has become a tradition for visitors who reach the peak—a small reward for making it to the top!

Our journey was filled with exciting and memorable destinations. We visited the Buffalo Bills grave site, offering a fascinating glimpse into the life of the legendary figure. The Red Rocks Amphitheater impressed with its stunning rock formations and breathtaking views. Another hotel you absolutely have to check out is Eddys Taproom and Hotel . Such an awesome hotel with amazing food!! We also explored a variety of hikes and parks, each with its own charm, from challenging trails with panoramic vistas to peaceful, nature-filled parks. These experiences, along with the diverse landscapes and rich history, made this journey unforgettable. Reflecting on our memories, we’re reminded of the world’s beauty and variety, and we look forward to the next adventure.
