While many people may not have Kansas City at the top of their travel list, I’ve compiled a list of reasons why you should consider visiting this charming city and experience firsthand all that it has to offer. Located on the border of Missouri and Kansas, Kansas City is famous for its world-class barbecue, rich jazz heritage, and stunning fountains. Whether you’re a foodie, music lover, history enthusiast, or just someone looking to explore something new, this city has something for everyone. Let’s dive into why Kansas City should be your next must-visit destination!
Explore the Fountains
Kansas City is often called the City of Fountains, and for good reason — the city boasts more fountains than any other place in the world, with the exception of Rome. Over 200 fountains can be found scattered throughout Kansas City, 48 of which are publicly operated. The city was officially dubbed the City of Fountains in the 1950s, and this title became an official part of the city’s seal in 1992.
Every year, in early April, Kansas City celebrates Greater Kansas City Fountain Day — a special event when all 48 of the public fountains come back to life, creating a stunning spectacle that signals the start of spring. It’s a local tradition that draws both residents and visitors to enjoy the beauty and history of these iconic fountains.
Here are some of the most notable fountains in Kansas City:
Famous Fountains in Kansas City
Fountain in Mill Creek Park
This is perhaps the best-known and most photographed fountain in Kansas City. Located at the east entrance to the bustling Country Club Plaza district and at the south end of Mill Creek Park, it’s a popular spot for both locals and visitors. It’s especially beautiful during the spring and summer months, making it a must-see in the city.

Firefighters Fountain and Memorial
Situated at the south end of Penn Valley Park, this fountain stands as a moving tribute to the brave men and women who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The memorial honors Kansas City’s fallen firefighters and is a serene, reflective spot for visitors.
Location: West 31st Street and Pennsylvania Avenue
Henry Wollman Bloch Fountain
This fountain is located at Pershing and Main Street, nestled between Union Station and the Liberty Memorial. With 232 jets arranged in three concentric rings, it “performs” a five-minute water show every hour and half hour. The vibrant choreography of water and light makes this fountain one of the most iconic in the city.
Location: 30 W Pershing Rd
Crown Center Square Fountain
Located at 2450 Grand Blvd, this fountain features a dazzling dancing water show synchronized to music performed by the Kansas City Symphony. It’s an exciting experience that adds a touch of whimsy to the Crown Center Square, perfect for families and visitors of all ages.
Location: 2450 Grand Blvd
Children’s Fountain
Situated at North Oak and East 32nd Avenue, this fountain is a tribute to children. It features six child sculptures, each standing 8 to 9 feet tall on their own pedestal. The playful design and interactive nature of the fountain make it a delightful spot for families to enjoy.
Location: North Oak and East 32nd Ave
These fountains not only contribute to the beauty of Kansas City but also carry rich histories and stories that reflect the heart of the community. Let me know if you’d like more details on any of these or additional suggestions!
Union Station
Historic Union Station is not only a functioning train station but also a stunning architectural masterpiece, opened in 1914. With its soaring 95-foot ceilings and grand chandeliers, Union Station remains one of the most iconic landmarks in Kansas City. While its beauty is undeniable, it also holds a darker chapter in history as the site of the infamous 1933 Kansas City Massacre, a violent shootout that left several law enforcement officers dead. If you take a walk around the exterior of the building, you might even spot bullet holes from this tragic event.
Visiting Union Station is free, though you may need to purchase tickets for some of the attractions inside. Among the most popular are Science City, a hands-on science museum; the Planetarium, where you can explore the stars; City Stage Live Theatre, offering live performances; and a classic movie theater for those looking to catch the latest films. The station also houses an array of restaurants and shops, making it a great place to spend a day in Kansas City.
For more information and event listings, visit Union Station’s Website.
Kansas City Murals and Sculptures
Kansas City is brimming with fantastic street art and sculptures that add a vibrant layer of creativity and culture to the city. Whether you’re strolling through neighborhoods or visiting public parks, you’re bound to stumble upon something unique. I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorites, though this is far from an exhaustive list – there’s always something new to discover!
- Community Bookshelf at the Kansas City Public Library
- Shuttlecocks located at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
- KC I’m So in Love
- Buck O’Neil Mural can be found at 18th and Vine in the Historic Jazz District.
Kansas City Barbeque
You can’t visit Kansas City without experiencing its world-famous BBQ. Whether you’re a fan of Texas, Memphis, or North Carolina barbecue styles, you have to try Kansas City’s unique take on BBQ. Known for its sweet, thick sauces and slow-cooked meats, Kansas City BBQ is a must for any food lover.
One of my personal favorites is Arthur Bryant’s Barbecue (arthurbryantsbbq.com), an iconic spot that has been serving up delicious BBQ for generations. For another legendary experience, give Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que a try — it’s a local favorite with mouthwatering options. And if you’re in the mood for something a little more upscale, head over to Fiorella’s Jack Stack Barbecue for an elevated BBQ experience that’s sure to impress
These spots are just the beginning of Kansas City’s BBQ scene, but they’re definitely a great starting point! Let me know if you need more recommendations or want to dive deeper into other must-try local eats!
Wine, Beer and Jazz Music
If you’re a fan of jazz music Green Lady Lounge is your place. You can find unique cocktails and live local jazz music every night of the week 365 days a year. No reservation required, just show up and listen to what Kansas City has to offer.
If wine is more your style check out Fountain City Winery. All their wine is amazing and the bottle labels are original and done by a local artist. Check them out in the artsy West Bottom District or at fountaincitywinery.com. BTW they also have beer and cocktails.
If your a beer lover you have to check out Boulevard Brewing Company (boulevard.com) So many great beers and plenty of room to hang out with family and friends. Not to mention you can take a tour, take home a growler, grab a bite to eat, check out the gift shop or if you have an event coming check out their private event space.
Kansas City Royals
If you’re a baseball fan and happen to be in Kansas City while the Royals are playing, you absolutely have to catch a game at Kauffman Stadium. Known for its stunning fountain-filled outfield and electric atmosphere, Kauffman Stadium is a true gem for sports lovers. Whether you’re cheering for the home team or just enjoying the experience, it’s an unforgettable way to spend a day in Kansas City.
For more information about game schedules and ticketing, visit MLB.com/Royals.
Let me know if you’d like more tips on things to do around the stadium or other events in the area!
Kansas City Chiefs
If football is more your sport, then you can’t miss the chance to catch the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, one of the loudest and most iconic stadiums in the NFL. The energy and excitement of a Chiefs game are unmatched, and the fan atmosphere is electric.
And if you’re really lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of Taylor Swift, who’s been known to make surprise appearances at Chiefs games, especially if her famous connection with Travis Kelce continues to make headlines.
Arrowhead Stadium is the ultimate spot for any football fan, whether you’re cheering on the Chiefs or soaking in the unforgettable experience. Let me know if you need more info on tickets or game schedules!
Of course by no means is this a complete list of things the city has to offer. These were places that interested me. But if your in the city for longer then a few days check out:
- The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
- National WWI Museum and Memorial
- Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium
